Tribe renovated and enlarged this 1930s brick bungalow for a young family. Deploying architectural sleight of hand, we reduced the building footprint, while increasing the floor area. New kids’ rooms are folded into a roof extension, which presents to the back garden as a giant decorative brick gable. The pattern in the brickwork meets the care and attention of the original house, where complex gables, bonding and herringbone work feature on the façade.
The planning is wrung out, internal rooms removed and the laundry is moved away from the best spot in the house. In its place, a new garden room connects to the landscape, housing an informal living, dining and kitchen that seamlessly connect to our clients’ fun-filled garden and support experiments with bees, gardens and cooking.
